NHRC and the UN, on Friday 2 December 2022, launched the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the United Nations in Nigeria have organised impactful week-long of activities to commemorate the 2022 International Human Rights Day, observed every 10 December. The activities included a Presidential Candidates Townhall on Human Rights; Press Conference; the launch of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 75th Year Anniversary logo; and Unveiling of a Call Centre Short Code for public complaints.
Others were Quiz competition for Junior Secondary Schools in FCT; Educational outreach to schools in FCT and Lagos; UN, Government and Partners Dialogue on Human Rights; Youth Dialogue on Human Rights; and Human Rights March.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all of us are entitled. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere, without distinction based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language, or any other status.
The UN, on Friday 2 December 2022, launched the 75th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with a Media Roundtable and officially unveiled the Anniversary Logo.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, reaffirmed the commitment of the UN in working with the NHRC and other partners to deliver on the promises made in 1948 to achieve Human Rights for all. "We can only rescue the Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs if human rights are at the centre of planning and implementation; and if we neglect human rights issues, we are all at risk." He said and called on everyone to stand up for their rights and those of others.
Executive Secretary of NHRC, Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN) solicited for greater commitment of the media to getting this year’s message of the UDHR to the people. At the same event, the UN and the NHRC launched a call center short code 6472 for the public to file complaints on human rights violations to the NHRC.
