Despite the suspension of oil operations in Ogoniland in 1993, environmental pollution persists, prompting the Federal Government of Nigeria to commission a study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to assess the situation. Subsequently, Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) was established in 2012 to ensure the successful implementation of the UNEP report recommendations.
On 25 February 2025, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, led a UN delegation to Ogoniland to assess the progress of remediation and restoration of mangrove, land and livelihoods.
